Kathea Yarnell is a Mezzo-soprano performing regularly as a soloist and professional chorister. The last 15 years she has been an established soloist, cantor and section leader at Epiphany Parish Seattle. Her wide vocal range and flexibility, affords her a variety of opportunities. With a strong interest in new music and adventurous programming, she has been featured as a soloist with the Seattle based groups The Emerald Ensemble, The Esoterics and Solaris Vocal Ensemble who premiere new works in various genres. Notable engagements include the Emerald Ensemble, The Mägi Ensemble, David Lang's "Little Match Girl Passion" with The Box is Empty, Cantatorem, Seattle Opera Chorus, whateverandeveramen., The Fisher Ensemble, Singin’ in the Rain - Dia de los Muertos fundraiser concert - Mozart Requiem, Great Bend Chorale - Messiah, and numerous individual concert offerings.

Kathea strongly advocates for the value of music education, not only for the benefit of the brain, but for human compassion and expression. She is passionate about helping children and adults truly find their voice and become confident musicians. With years of directing children’s choruses, teaching students of all ages, and performing with everything from church choirs to opera to bluegrass bands, Kathea has developed a positive, nurturing, joyful style of instruction. She helps students build strong foundations that facilitate growth of their physical techniques and artistic capabilities. 

Kathea earned Music Education degrees from the University of Washington and studied voice with Tom Harper, Valerie Yockey, Stephen Wall and Eric Banks. She has always called the Puget Sound area home and currently lives on the Eastside with her husband, Adam, and two children. When not wrangling her kids, teaching, or performing, she enjoys movies, reading, ALL types of theater, making folk, indie and bluegrass music with friends, and volunteering in the Northshore School District.
