Chris Young
Instructor of Cello
MM University of Michigan
BM University of Miami
Chris Young has played the cello since the year 2000, when a 2nd-grade classmate’s show-and-tell cello performance inspired him to start learning. After graduating from Interlochen Arts Academy in 2010, Chris earned music degrees at the University of Miami and the University of Michigan. He has been a member of the Idaho Falls Symphony and the Miami Symphony, and currently serves as Assistant Principal Cello in Symphony Tacoma. An avid chamber musician, Chris has performed at nearly 100 Miami weddings and was the first cellist of the Stamps String Quartet, a fellowship ensemble at the University of Miami. In 2014-15, he assisted composer Michael Daugherty in the editing and development of Daugherty’s Grammy-winning cello concerto, Tales of Hemingway. Chris was a member of the Discovery Trio, a flute-harpsichord-cello ensemble specializing in Baroque and Contemporary music featured by the University of Washington School of Music in 2017-18. Throughout the past several years, Chris performed frequently with the UW Modern and Baroque Ensembles. Currently, his main musical focus is with the Morsel Piano Trio, a Seattle-based group that explores many genres. Chris has studied with Richard Aaron, Crispin Campbell, Ross Harbaugh, Janet McIntosh, Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, and Robert Tueller. He plays a Christopher Dungey cello on generous loan from the Wong/Engel Cello Library.
